Singapore Primary School: The FAQ Real Parents Actually Need

All the questions you're too embarrassed to ask, answered by someone who's been there.

Quick Navigation

P1 Registration

When Does P1 Registration Actually Start?

Short answer: Early July, running through August/September.

Longer answer: MOE announces exact dates in June each year. But generally:

PhaseWhen It Happens
Phase 1Early July
Phase 2AMid-July
Phase 2BLate July
Phase 2CLate July - Early August
Phase 2C(Supp)Mid-August

What Documents Do I Actually Need?

For you and your spouse:

  • NRIC (front and back)
  • Passport (if you're a PR)
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)

For your child:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Citizenship documents
  • Passport (if PR)

Plus phase-specific stuff:

PhaseExtra Documents
Phase 1Sibling's details
Phase 2APSLE cert OR staff appointment letter OR MOE Kindergarten enrollment proof
Phase 2BVolunteer completion letter (40+ hours) or community leader endorsement

Pro tip: Scan everything NOW. Keep digital copies on your phone. You'll thank yourself later.

How Does This Phase System Actually Work?

Think of it as priority ordering. Earlier phases = better chances.

PhasePriorityWho Gets In
Phase 1HighestSiblings of current students
Phase 2AVery HighFormer students, staff, MOE Kindergarten students
Phase 2BMedium-HighParent volunteers (40+ hrs) or community leaders
Phase 2CMediumEveryone else
Phase 2C(Supp)LowerStill no place? This is your last shot

Balloting: When more people apply than there are spots, they hold a lottery. Citizens get priority over PRs. Distance from school (<1km, 1-2km, >2km) also affects priority during balloting.

Reserved places: 60 places are reserved at each school — 20 for Phase 2B and 40 for Phase 2C — to ensure fair access for later phases.

What If I Miss the Deadline?

Don't panic. Contact MOE immediately. They'll help you register at a school with vacancies.

Reality check: You'll have fewer choices. It'll be schools with remaining spots, not necessarily your dream school.

Prevention: Set reminders at 3 months, 1 month, 1 week, and day-before your phase. Seriously. Set them now.

  • Set a target score WITH your child (not for them)

6 months out:

  • More timed practice papers
  • Keep an "error book" to learn from mistakes
  • Maintain sleep and exercise (this matters!)

1 month out:

  • Light revision only
  • Focus on weak spots
  • Keep routine normal

1 week out:

  • Light review only
  • Early bedtime
  • Prep exam materials

During PSLE:

  • Encouragement, not pressure

Golden rule: Balance. Don't burn out your kid.
